The Devil and Max Largent by Michael Tomlin

Image
The Devil wakes Max Largent and asks him to write a book for him. The Devil says he needs a book, using Max's life as an example of what is wrong today so that the world can be saved before it becomes dark and he is out of a job. Max can't quite figure out if he is dreaming or if this conversation is really happening! What the heck! Max lives alone and has not been much of a people person. Rhett, his German Shepherd, has been all he has needed as a best friend. Unfortunately, Max has not been feeling well, and after taking medical tests, he discovers that he has stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer and only has about three months to live. So Max decides to write the book for the Devil as he reflects on his life and also decides to take a one-way trip to Hawaii. Yet, unexpectedly, Max has a surprise visitor that significantly impacts his life before he dies. It's been a while since I've read a sad book. To be honest, I usually avoid them. All that is Hidden by Rhys Bowen and Clare Broyles

I had read the first in the Molly Murphy series years ago but, for some reason, had not continued with the rest of the series despite having read all of Rhys Bowen's other series, the  Her Royal Spyness  (which I absolutely love). I was a bit worried that it might be difficult getting into this latest ina the series; however, it was easy to jump into the book. She doesn't think this is at all like him! Not only is he going into politics, but he's also on the ticket running against William Randolph Hurst. Molly and Daniel are loaned a fancy house on 5th Avenue as part of the job. The move to higher society brings some strange political dealings, backroom conversations, and ultimately, a murder for Molly and Daniel to solve...

The Weasel Cay Chronicles by Chadd Wheat

Image
Charlie Spinnaker has retired from the United States Navy and now runs the Weasel Cay Air Service. He's often called upon to take on random transport service runs in addition to ferrying passengers back and forth between the mainland and the island. Charlie's brother is the island's head of police and also the owner of the local watering hole (complete with a coffee-addicted Spider monkey). However, there might be more to Charlie's brother than meets the eye, as Charlie soon gets mixed up in drug busts, suspicious deliveries, death, and spies. To top it all off, a Russian hitman has been hired to terminate Charlie due to a case of mistaken identity, and his ex-girlfriend has returned to the island with a new smarmy boyfriend in tow. Just when you thought retiring from the military would lead you to a quiet and idyllic life on a remote island! I thought this would be an amusing read but was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I sped through the  Weasel Cay C...
